The coastal city of Porto is widely known for its magnificent bridges, colourful architectures, quaint cobbled streets and charming cafes. And it is while exploring this city did we come across a makeover project that left us stunned and at a loss for words. This apartment in Porto was originally a gloomy and old-fashioned abode which lacked brightness, spirit and the touch of modernism. The furnishing was dated, and the walls and flooring were in need of urgent upgrade. The décor was devoid of pizzazz and personality too. But the intervention of the architects at Germano de Castro Pinheiro, LDA changed everything. Now the apartment is a dazzling delight for the senses, with its refreshing hues, modish layout, contemporary elements and a smart design scheme.

Before: Busy Patterns and Dark Colours

The kitchen was earlier replete with elements that may have seemed like an eclectic mix at one time, but looked dull and uninspiring as of now. The bone white refrigerator stood out like an eye sore in the brown kitchen with its floral motif that did not seem to belong in this scheme!

After: A Sparkling White Kitchen with Urban Connotations

The new white kitchen is a pristine space that has a single defining element of interest – the black granite counter tops. With the addition of this single element, the designers have managed to keep things sleek as well as simple, even as they play with light and subtle touches to highlight the scale of the space. The glossy cabinets cater to storage; while a wall mounted rack holds all ladles for easy access.

Before: Old and Boring Touches

While we love vintage touches, this fireplace seemed at odds with the rest of the room. The dark wooden floor and the old school furnishing and decor seemed out of place, and augmented the gloomy ambiance despite the presence of large windows.

After: Pale Nordic Appeal

The pale colours and the neutral design bring out a strong Nordic appeal at present. The dark floor has been swapped for a pale wooden one, while the fireplace is now a streamlined piece with a contemporary edge. The simple dining chairs along with the neat dining table balance the plush couches in the living area.

Before: An Out of Fashion Bedroom

The bed with its ornamental headboard seemed like the odd man out in this otherwise dark and depressing space. Dark flooring, ageing walls, and lack of modern accents made the bedroom appear sad and unwelcoming too.

After: Classic, Simple and Fresh

The bedroom now boasts of a heavenly feel with its classic country touches including the vintage suitcases for the night stand, and the tufted headboard in sophisticated brown!

Before: Visually Jarring Touches

The painfully loud retro tiles and the mismatched blue curtains were making this bathroom look tired in design terms! The fixtures were of a completely different colour, and were begging for an update in these cramped quarters!

After: The Super Cool Bathroom

The bathroom is now a cool and bright space that actually gives enough scope for functionality, thanks to a more fluid layout of the fixtures and the white colour that adorns its walls along with the mirrored panels.

This makeover project makes it evident that modern designs, clean colours, simple but stylish accents and a clever layout can take a drab apartment to heights of wow! Take a look at another transformation story, for more ideas - Awful to Awesome: The Stunning Renovation of a Tiny Bathroom.
