The New Year is a great opportunity to take stock of your life, decide what you would like to change or improve, and give yourself a fresh start, and the same is true of your home. Over the course of a year we develop as people, meaning some aspects of the decor that we once loved can start to feel stale or boring. We think you should embrace that change, and reflect it in your home, and we're going to show you how.

The New Year is also a time of celebration and family, so you may not have the time or motivation to undertake a huge renovation, which is why we're going to look at small things you can do to make you fall back in love with your home. These can be as simple as giving your home a thorough clean, or quick changes to the decor that will make a lasting impression, so join us, and you're sure to find some fun ways to spend the holidays that will have a huge impact on your home!

1. Cleaning the home

This may seem simple, but that's because it is! Giving your home a thorough clean will completely change the way you look at it, making it feel fresh and new.

We're not just talking about wiping down the surfaces mind you. The most important aspect of cleaning the home out is reducing clutter, which means taking stock of everything, and getting rid of things that you no longer use, or that add nothing to the decor.

2. Get an exciting new light fixture

If you've never thought twice about the light fixtures in your home then chances are there's an exciting opportunity to make a huge impact on your decor just waiting to be taken advantage of.

It's rare that we take the time to choose really special light fixtures, and most homes are content with a simple hanging bulb. But that almost feels like a crime when there are so many artistic options out there, such as this stunning, artistic piece above the dining room table that looks like a futuristic chandalier.

3. Fresh linens for your bedroom

There's no more luxurious a gift you can give yourself than fresh linens for your bed. Apart from that wonderful feeling of climbing into a bed fitted with brand new sheets, it also gives you a chance to really tighten the aesthetic of your bedroom.

Choose linens that will complement the decor of your home, like they have here where the two colours of the bedspread match the white walls and ceiling, and the cappuccino furniture and floors.

4. Introduce some greenery into your home

Nothing reinvigorates a tired space like living, breathing plants. There's really no wrong way to go about this, simply choose your favourite flowers and aromatic plants, herbs are always a good option as they also contribute to your culinary efforts, and put them absolutely anywhere there's a spare spot in your home.

5. Rearrange your furniture

If you've been living in your home for a while, you may have found you've accumulated a lot of new furniture, without taking the time to properly work out how to fit it into your living areas. Now may be the time to completely rearrange your furniture, to make sure you are maximising the space available, and there's good flow to your home.

Measure up the room you want to rearrange, as well as the furniture that fills it, and then work out some ideas on paper before you start the heavy lifting to save yourself some time and energy.

6. Build shelves

It's a given that almost every home needs more storage and display areas. Without them homes start to feel cluttered as we try to jam all of our ornaments and possessions onto every available surface, cramping and overwhelming the room. The simplest solution to this problem is to install a couple of new shelves.

Here they've opted for high shelves above the balcony doors on which they've displayed books, ornaments, and lush hanging vines.

7. New artwork

To inject some personality and fun into your decor, try hanging up some new artwork. Shopping for art is a lot of fun, and while it's great if the art complements the decor, it's more important that it reflects you as a person. If you're feeling really ambitious we suggest you create a gallery wall like they have here with plenty of framed pieces of art or family photographs.

8. Paint a feature wall

If you're tired of the colour palette in your home, but don't have the time or money for a complete renovation then try giving your home a feature wall. This works especially well in homes with a white or neutral colour palette, where almost any colour will work. Here they've opted for a bright summery yellow that really brings this room to life.

9. Sort out the entranceway to your home

The entrance to your home sets the tone for your entire decor, so it's important that it's well organised and looks fabulous. We highly suggest you include some kind of coat rack, and ideally somewhere to put your shoes. This stops you from just throwing your coat on the couch, or kicking your shoes down the hallway, as well as saving you time in those hurried mornings.

A set of drawers or a console table is another great addition, providing storage, as well as space to decorate your entranceway to make it memorable and unique.

10. Restore old furniture

If you have some antique furniture that's a little worse for wear, but for whatever reason you just can't bring yourself to throw it out, rest easy, because we have a great solution. Restoring old furniture is a great way to give your home a shabby chic vibe that's as adorable as it is trendy. The key here is to retain a little bit of those rough edges so that the piece doesn't lose its vintage charm, just like this fantastic set of drawers.

These small changes may be quick and easy, but we promise you you'll never look at your home the same way again! For more fantastic renovation tips check out this article on revamping your walls.
