A newly married couple have every right to insist upon a newly decorated house. Even though the economic situation for many young newlyweds isn't as bright as it once was, this is still a reasonable and achievable desire. While it might not be possible for every couple to secure themselves a bright, newly built abode, an old and outdated apartment can be transformed into a chic, modern living space with a little  imagination and ingenuity.

This 20 year old apartment is one such home. Renovated by the domestic interior designers Design Brides, it turns what was once a sad, tired flat into a glimmering masterpiece. It's the perfect honeymoon home – let's take a wander…

Before: The kitchen

This dark, depressing space is not what a couple wants to come home to after a honeymoon! The wallpaper is dreary, the cupboards are dated, and what's with all the clutter?

There's random furniture all over the place, and the bin is full to bursting. This kind of decor might have been acceptable in the 1990's, but not anymore.

Before: The bedroom

The bedroom was a bit of an improvement, but it still needed a lot of work! A small balcony is situated to the right of the bed, but it was sadly unused and full of junk before Design Brides got to work.

The colours were dreary and muted, and there was clutter crammed into every corner. No young couple could stand to live like this – let's find out how they fixed it.

After: The hallway

This new hallway design feels fresh, bright and modern. A clean, crisp white has been used on the walls, which contrasts sharply with the heavy black front door and the trendy hanging lamp.

The smartest new addition is that sneaky cupboard on the right hand side – we bet it took you a few moments to notice that! It's glossy and handle-less, which helps it to blend in seamlessly, and offers a huge amount of secret storage space. This is a tip that can be copied in even the smallest hallways – take note.

After: Living room

The new living room is sleek and neat, with enough space and surfaces for the new inhabitants to store and display all of their treasured belongings. It's modern without being too faddy, which means that it will age well and not require too many renovations and updates over the years.

Huge sliding doors open up onto a covered balcony that can reveal or hide a stunning view, depending on the position of the blinds. These doors let light flood into the apartment, illuminating the brand new furniture and the polished wooden floor.

After: A kitchen to be proud of

What a transformation! This kitchen looks like a trendy Danish eatery, complete with hip subway tiles, arty minimalist lighting and pale wooden furniture. The clutter is long gone, replaced by sleek worktops and chrome appliances.

A single shelf lines the left wall, providing space for a small but sophisticated selection of drinks and glasses. Subtle recessed lighting has been added to the ceiling to further illuminate this otherwise dark space.

After: A room with a view

That long covered balcony has been cleared out, offering an extension to the room we saw earlier. The doors are now pretty much always folded back, making the room look bigger and more welcoming.

A comfortable double bed has replaced that depressing old single – perfect for two newlyweds! The biggest change, though, is the storage – an extra panel has been built into the bedroom, sectioning off a quarter of the room and turning it into a hidden walk-in wardrobe.

After: A new addition

Sticking to the minimalist theme of the renovation as a whole, this new walk-in wardrobe has heaps of hidden storage and more than enough room to try on different outfits before heading out to work or play. Light gets in thanks to a three quarter wall and glass panels, and that stylish Scandi light fixture adds a little helping hand.

Handle-less sliding cupboards save space and make it easier to move around the limited space, and alcoves have been cleverly installed to store bags and shoes. See, even the smallest apartments can squeeze a dressing room into a forgotten corner. All you need is a little imagination – and the help of an outstanding team like Design Brides to make it a reality.
