After purchasing a piece of land in Blaricum, The Netherlands, the clients sought to find a local architect to realise their dream home. Thus Kabaz was selected to design and oversee the entire project.
From the exterior right through to the interior furnishings, a high level of consideration was given to finishing. Employing a somewhat traditional form, complete with thatched roof, the home acknowledges the local context while providing a contemporary space for living. Now let's take a closer look so you can see for yourself!
Here, we see the terrace sheltered by the portico structure. The space feels neither entirely outdoor nor entirely outdoors, forming an extended threshold between inside and out. Ample outdoor furniture implores entertaining in the warmer summer months. Large french doors open onto the terrace, enhancing the classic aesthetic of the space.
From the back garden we get to take in the various structures that comprise the house. The steep pitch of the thatched roofs make them a dominant part of the landscape. The gable end of the roof employs a partial hip – the peculiar form almost looks as if it is a bonnet sitting atop the house.
The second level is located within the roof space and is clad in black stained timber weatherboards. Below, a large white portico structure extends out to form a delightful terrace.
Stepping inside, we see that no luxury has been spared. The fireplace is as much an art piece as it is functional. Sleek industrial surfaces are paired with plush materials to create a contemporary and opulent atmosphere. The timber parquet flooring has a time-worn and very natural appeal. Adding texture and character to the room, it becomes a common thread throughout many of the spaces. An unusual chandelier drops almost to ground level, drawing the eye to the deepest corner of the space. Again, plush materials are used for all furnishings.
The bathroom is no exception – grand opulence reigns supreme. The golden tones of the mosaic tiles glisten on the walls, while mirrored surfaces create a trompe l'oeil that makes the space feel twice the size it is and almost a little surreal. As if this home didn't quite have all the touches of luxury you were looking for, there's a bar and snooker room too! A dramatic light feature hovers above the snooker table, while the back wall house the bar. Eschewing natural light, the space feels like a bunker, completely removed from what is happening beyond its four walls and dark ambiance.
