“Broken-plan living” is an interior design trend that is paving the way to modern living. Nowadays not only do people enjoy large spaces, but also the sense of a “snug home”, which is what they get from broken-plan living layouts where technology creates independence in an area.

What is broken-plan living?

Broken-plan living refers to the interior design technique that requires the skills of interior architects for the creation of the initial layout, which puts elements into places such as a small feature wall in the middle of the living room and kitchen, or creating a partially enclosed kitchen that allows for a “closed-kitchen” look half separating the living room from the cooking area.

With broken-plan living, the “semi-divisions” creates a sense of depth, just as you’d experience when looking at a painting. Only this can be “lived” in and enjoyed in real-time.

Many high-end large homes were taking the forefront of the broken-plan living space, which had an exceptionally great effect on their double volume large spaces. In these days even smaller homes are adapting to the design trend.

Broken-plan kitchen

This is an excellent example of how designers used the broken-plan concept to create some closure yet keep to the free-flow of the emerging spaces. The absolutely gorgeous kitchen island means fewer countertops around the side of the kitchen giving the illusion of more space – ideal for smaller homes.

A sense of artistic depth

Broken-plan living can be used brilliantly to layer elements of a home and give the illusion of depth and greater space. Here the long kitchen island in combination with a long dining table give off the feeling that this space goes on forever.

A rustic touch

This space offers an open plan with a rustic touch featuring raw stone walls and kitchen counters which adds to the broken-plan living design here. Using different materials is an excellent way to isolate different areas from each other without adding barriers or walls.

Quaint and chic

This quaint space is an added touch of broken-plan living that is not only beautiful and chic but adds to that feeling of homely minimalism.

Adding a half wall

Using a half wall is a brilliant way to break up the space and clearly define one area from another while transparent glass maintains the open-space feeling. Here, we have a clear line of sight through to the rear of the house while the half wall and steps stop the furniture from looking lost in the space.
