Shelves may not seem like the most exciting topic, but there are so many materials and ideas out there, that they are worth consideration. A corner shelf is such a good idea for any room. They really do work well in any space, from kitchens to living rooms. Offering an excellent space saving solution, they are tucked out of the way, whilst giving great storage for anything you like.

Corner shelves come in many varieties, from shelves that fix to the walls to freestanding units. This means you can get one, whatever your needs. Each variety has their own benefits – a shelf fixed to the wall is perfect for awkward spaces, whereas a freestanding unit can be moved to wherever you need it to be. We have selected 10 different ideas below to show just how flexible this option can be as a solution.

Simply freestanding

Bathrooms are such an important room. We probably spend more time in here than we should, getting ready for work, relaxing in the bath or just taking a quite five minutes from the ruckus of the after school run. We love our bathrooms, because they are a bit of a sanctuary. Because of this, making sure we have all we need handy is really quite important . A freestanding unit like this one, can be incredibly useful. Here we can see it has made excellent use of this recessed corner, making the most of the space available. The dark would is a wonderful contrast to the lighter walls and marbled fireplace too.

Recessed corners

If space is limited in general, then why not incorporate shelves into the design? This bathroom is very contemporary and modern and we love the slimline design of everything. Space is certainly at a premium here and every space is needed. The designers have incorporated shelves into the wall, making great use of a corner that would, otherwise, have been unusable.

Mixed look shelves

Once more we are looking at built in shelves, designed by Laura Sole Interiors, we think these look marvellous. Made with glass and wood, they are simply stunning, as well as practical. Building shelves in, like these, mean you can put them in any corner. They are made to measure, so no space is ever too big or too small. The glass allows a sense of space because they are see through, whilst the white painted wood on the bottom matches the sink.

Awkward spaces

As we mentioned before, a bathroom can be an awkward shape. And this is where corner shelves come into there own and that once dull subject of shelves becomes a little more exciting. This bathroom is long, narrow and has a slanted roof, which means that any space is needed for storage if possible. These wire shelves are the perfect addition to make the space usable. The are not very deep, but they have height, and thus more shelves, giving a good amount of space. Placement is key here too. The shelves are in the top corner, well out of the way and leaving the other wall entirely clear, making the room feel less cluttered.

Stone effect

A bathroom is a room that we like to feel natural if we can. Often designs incorporate features and colours taken from nature, whether that is greens of the forest or the blues of the ocean, this is why we love these freestanding shelves. The stone design gives them a real sense of being unique and natural looking, with a gorgeous splash of colour. With different sizes available, they are perfect for any corner, and not limited to a bathroom either.

Built in bedroom

The absolute joy of having bespoke furniture built in is that it can be made to fit your own requirements. This wardrobe is the perfect example of how a corner can be utilised. The shelves in the wardrobe itself are brilliant and store absolutely everything. Then there is also good use externally with more corner shelves. Corners are notoriously awkward to buy furniture for, so having something designed for your own needs, like this, is something worth thinking about.

Stair storage

Another awkward space here! We love this clever use if these corner shelves going up the hallway stairs. They are such a clever way to get creative with corner shelves. These stairs would have had a dead space otherwise, and the designers have very sleekly added extra storage that is practical and looks amazing. Perfect for family photos, decorations or filled with books, these are a lovely design solution.

Cluttered corner

From absolute contemporary design to the shabby chic. These corner shelves show how much you can get onto them, if this is the look you want. Fixed to the wall, these corner shelves are much more permanent, as opposed to moveable. The shelves are dark wood and go well with the wallpaper behind them, which is as busy as the shelves!

Clever cornering

A lot of older houses that have chimney breasts, have recesses on either side of them. It can sometimes be a bit of a waste of space if not used. Here we can see that the space has really been maximised with the use of shelves and a cupboard at the base. Painted white to match the surrounding walls, the shelves blend in effortlessly, but add some very much needed storage in a family home.

Something a little different

If building into a corner, or having specific corner shelves isn't for you, why not try this? A unit that sits at an angle can offer a lovely look and help break up the way we think of a room. This unit in particular is stunning. The natural wood and baskets offer a lovely warm feeling and offset the cream. With the green plants adding a touch of colour, the whole corner of this room is now bright and purposeful.
