Surimono ╳ Journey
a space concentrating culture experiences and
This hotel targets at Japanese businessmen, who comes from the country that has Ukiyo-e art. Surimono are a genre of Ukiyo-e. People usually gave Surimono to each other as gifts, representing the transmission of feelings and experiences.
We found the cultural contexts from Ukiyo-e – to be more precisely, from the scene in the Edo period. Umbrellas that people held in a sudden shower of rain, hand fans that Geisha used in their dance, the tumbling great wave and the stable Mount Fuji in the great wave off Kanagawa, show a vivid scene which is a fount of design inspiration.
We made wood and marble interlaced as Surimono origami folded in this hotel, presenting a strong intention to give dramatic tension by using asymmetrical tripartite composition.
When people are wearied with this journey on the foreign land, Surimono in the hotel convey warm, touching emotions to revive tired people, and let them experience the tranquility from the Edo period.
