Bowden House Cheshire is Shortlisted for the SGD Finalist 2015 Awards: Pocket Garden Category (100m2 or less)
Our client approached us to design their small courtyard garden after having seen our show gardens at both RHS Chelsea Flower Show and RHS Tatton Park in 2012. The space was tiny, approaching 80m square including the front garden, and felt very much like a corridor, due to the new L-shaped kitchen extension which protruded significantly into the garden.
Our brief was to maximise the functionality of the garden space, whilst also ensuring a beautiful view when seen from within. An existing brick wall, had significant issues, being both in poor repair structurally and aesthetically unattractive, we introduced steel posts to strengthen and support the wall, together with a hard wood slatted trellis above to provide privacy and much needed screening from a neighbouring garden. The walling was then rendered and painted in an off white, to provide light and airiness and a feeling of space, and was complemented with a pale grey sandstone paving, trimmed with a grey sandstone sett detail. Slate grey planters were introduced to provide raised planting, creating a mix of levels to provide interest, and also an aesthetic transition from the lower level sandstone paving to the upper deck level. A beautiful Ipe hardwood deck was designed and installed to provide an ambient seating area, which was accessed immediately from the kitchen.
Spatial planning was paramount in this design to ensure the tiny space ‘felt larger’ than it really was, and to maximise on the functionality of this courtyard garden. The lush green architectural planting provided further structure and form to the garden, and a mix of herbaceous planting was interspersed to provide seasonal interest.
Aralia worked as Garden Designers working within a multi-disciplinary consultant team which included a range of sub-contractors and a structural engineer.
